Quietly and elegantly sitting behind Haida artist Dean Drever's sculpture at the entrance of the new Epcor Tower is a wall of Panache glass. Four feet by eight feet hand-textured and painted glass panels make up the impressive 25 feet by 35 feet waterfall-like wall.

A project that Panache worked on last October 2011 is a part of a prize in the lottery launched by the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation. Their fourth annual lottery gives entrants a 1 in 15 chance to win at least one of over 4,500 prizes - one of which includes a 4,700 square-foot grand prize show home in Upper Windermere. The show home is custom-built by Carriage Signature Homes and is professionally decorated including glass panels and custom handmade glass and ceramic tile by Panache Glass and Ceramic.

Come see some young aspiring local design talent! An exhibition of furniture design by University of Alberta students is happening this Friday in collaboration with Panache Glass and Ceramics. The students have been working hard over the past 6 weeks bringing their designs from sketches on paper to a physical 3D object. They have had their run of the glass and ceramics workshop at Panache to prototype their designs.

Kasian and Panache Glass at the Festival of Trees!

Kasian Architecture's christmas tree this year for the Festival of Trees was a collaboration with Panache Glass. Close to 100 pieces of textured glass were shaped and then stacked on top of one another to create this gorgeous glass christmas tree. It won GOLD in the contest this year!

Go support the Festival's great cause to raise funds for patient care and research at the University of Alberta hospital at this year's Festival of Trees and come see this amazing creation! From December 2nd - 5th.

Last night Panache attended the opening of Modern Kitchens' new showroom. Many of the new displays feature Panache glass and ceramic tile along with a couple of unique glass art feature pieces and glass sinks. It was a great night of delicious food, cocktails, live music and chatting with everyone there. Thanks to Modern Kitchens for this lovely evening.

Panache attended the opening of a new showhome by Carriage Signature Homes last night in Upper Windermere, a new community in southwest Edmonton. It was a semi-formal affair featuring Edmonton musicians and a wine tasting with delicious gourmet appetizers to snack on.

Carriage Signature did an amazing job decorating this showhome which included pieces done by Panache!

Manola over saw her seven paneled glass landscape scene being installed at the Strathcona County Library yesterday. She came in to Panache today and shared these photos with us and said the gratification and exhilaration of seeing this project finished and in place was amazing.

We're all so proud of her and are continually blown away by the gorgeous work that she does. We look forward to seeing more from her...

The new Strathcona Library will be opening in a few days. Be sure to stop by there to see this piece in person!

Did you know that all of Panache's clay scraps, broken tiles, and waste are 100% recyclable? The pieces are broken down, reconstituted, then poured onto plaster slabs and extruded into fresh clay.

These pieces of up-cycled glass have been transformed into decorative elements which can be used to bring a splash of colour to the indoor or outdoor. The glass can be textured or smooth and any colour up to 6 foot lengths. We've used them to brighten up our planters at the entrance of our shop. Come check them out!

We showed off beautiful panels of glass art from artists Manola, Ian Sheldon, and Tammy Henkel with metal sculptural stands by Rogelio Menz which held Manola's glass panel tulips. There was also a couple of more contemporary pieces -- a series of 3 floral panels that encouraged people to interact with by colouring in the flowers + 3 neon coloured tree inspired panels.

The graphic is printed on 34" x 6' 4" up-cycled glass panels which has been slightly textured to give it that extra something something.

This is our cameo tile, lovely ovals and diamond inserts, hand pressed with our Old World Antique glaze in high gloss. Here it is combined with glass mosaic design by Erin Adams.

Ian Sheldon is a celebrated artist and illustrator, with galleries in England, the United States and Canada, and dozens of books featuring his work. Very much a citizen of the world, Sheldon has lived in South Africa, Singapore and England. He makes his home in Canada where his reputation as a successful Western artist continues to grow. Drawing on inspirations from his place of birth on the edge of the prairies in Canada in 1971, and his time spent in Europe, his paintings are a celebration of his sense of place and spirituality.

While studying for his first degree (BA Hons) at Cambridge University, England, Sheldon began to paint the historical architecture of the city. Since 1994 galleries have exhibited this work, and in 1998, Cambridge Contemporary Art, the city’s leading commercial gallery, accepted his watercolours. He makes frequent trips to Britain and France to pursue his architectural passion.

A self-taught artist, Sheldon believes that his true understanding of artistic self-expression will come best through his own experimentation. Sheldon holds degrees from Cambridge University and the University of Alberta. His studies in the natural sciences are reflected in some of his subject choices, but the learning experience has more importantly taught him about the significant influences in his life. In addition to thearchitectural watercolours, Sheldon has directed his interests to the Western Canadian wilderness. This has successfully combined his passion for the arts with his academic interest in the natural world, and his spiritual place within it. These striking landscapes have been well received in Canada and overseas, earning
him First Prize for Landscapes at the Alberta 2000 Winter Games Art Exposition and recognition on a national level in 2004 with the inclusion of his biography in the Canadian Who’s Who. As an extension of the philosophical basis for his landscapes, Sheldon has also turned to exploring people’s connections to the land through the rural architectural landscape. His atmospheric watercolours of decaying buildings have brought both television and magazine attention, and were acquired by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts in a juried acquisition of art.

Sheldon is also an accomplished writer and illustrator with many publications through Lone Pine Publishing. His nature guides for North America now grace bookshelves across the continent. One of his recent successes is Bugs of Alberta, a provincial non-fiction bestseller authored by John Acorn. Many more books featuring Sheldon’s life-like illustrations are slated for the press. Other ventures include a guide for Ecuador, a voluntary project aiming to increase conservation awareness in Ecuador.

We are really excited to share our ideas for this public art project with you. Let us know what you think.

PROPOSAL ONE

Panache proposes to install “upcycled” glass panels and tile inside the ring-shaped retaining walls along the Whitemud freeway. Upcycling will involve taking over 16,000 square feet of glass that would otherwise be trash and using it to create beautiful and tasteful public art. Subdued glass with muted colours that can blend with the forms of the walls, the slope of the hillside and still be appreciated by passing drivers is what we strive for. Panache is interested in presenting glass in colours reminiscent of the golden hues of the river valley during fall. We are thinking of two approaches: tiles would be made in 12”x12” format that form a ‘pixelated’ image; or, large panels 3 feet wide and varying in height will have flat colours in a similar palette range. The colours involved will be formulated to not be too variable as to be distracting for drivers.

Manola Borrajo-Giner was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. She began her art career after receiving a BA in Sociology. Her art training includes courses at the University of Colorado and the University of California at Los Angeles. She considers herself a self-taught artist. She moved to Edmonton in 2000. Her natural creativity has been further enriched when she was introduced to glass at Panache. Since 2002, she has been exploring that medium and has created numerous bold and rich pieces. Her technique includes the use of large dots that catch the eye with their detail and work to make her art unique. Nature has been a primary theme in her glass work: poppies, trees and other organic forms. She likes to manipulate glass like wood, her other favourite medium, stretching the boundaries between drama and romaniticism. Glass and Manola are a special mix. Manola's participation in group and solo shows continues to expand, and her work is rapidly gaining recognition and acclaim. "Colours have always been around me, the tropical light of Caracas mixed perfectly with the light of Edmonton... and I love that too."

Manola will be making art in Vancouver during the coming year, we will miss her, but look forward to her infectious energy in the studio again!

Upcycling saves environment and creates art with Panache

Panache Glass & Ceramics wanted to make a meaningful commitment to the environment by rethinking the steps they took in the manufacture of their art glass projects and installations.They quickly moved beyond the idea of using of recycled glass and landed upon the idea of Upcycling in order to reduce their carbon footprint. Panache sourced cast off glass from manufacturers and architectural salvage companies and put it into the hands of artist in order to create installations and functional art at the Panache studios. The response to the work has been tremendous and the company has committed to a target of having 80% of their projects done in this way by 2012.

In their environmental quest, Panache ruled out the use of recycled glass. They felt although worthy of consideration, the end product still left a significant carbon footprint ---- transportation to a recycling plant, crushing, re-manufacturing, shipping, etc. They began to realize that Upcycling, had a far smaller environmental impact and were determined to begin to use these glass cast offs as their canvas. Upcycling is a refining process, the act of making something into a more elegant form with greater artistic value and Panache has succeeded in doing just that.

Whether making functional art that can be used as door inserts, back splashes, table tops, shower walls or interior glass panels, the work defines interior space and changes the way people think about glass. The interplay with light, color and texture pulls in the viewer and succeeds in bridging architecture and fine art. Commissioned artists such as Ian Sheldon and Manola Borrajo-Giner along with Panache’s in-house artists are changing the way people think about glass.

Jade and Mamo glazes

JADE

Jade is a naturally variable glaze going from umber to deep green when pooling. The finish is glossy crackle with occasional matte surfaces. In this display embossed field tile is combined with a speedbump basketweave, woodplank effect field tile, and dragonfly emboss.

Our Mamo glaze is inspired by a traditional Japanese ceramic glaze. Our Mamo goes from a seductively soft yellow to a crackle silver blush.
